The result is an estimate to start from, not a target you have to hit. Use it as the beginning of a conversation with a dietitian or doctor.
Basal metabolic rate (BMR): — calories — what your body burns completely at rest.
Now that you know your target, the hard part is counting Greek food. GreekCalories recognises souvlaki, pastitsio and gemista — and carries menus from Greek restaurants with calories and macros.
Download the appHow it works
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor formula, currently considered the most reliable estimate of basal metabolic rate. It works out what you burn at rest, then adds your activity.
How are the calories worked out?
With the Mifflin-St Jeor formula, currently considered the most accurate for basal metabolic rate. It calculates your BMR from height, weight, age and sex, then multiplies it by your activity factor.
What is basal metabolic rate (BMR)?
The calories your body burns completely at rest, just to keep working — heart, breathing, brain, temperature. It is roughly 60-75% of your daily calories.
How accurate is it?
It is an estimate. The formula has a typical error of around 10%, and it knows nothing about your body composition. Use it as a starting point and adjust based on what the scales show after 2-3 weeks.
Why won't it give me a lower number?
Because this calculator stops early on purpose. It never goes below your basal metabolic rate, nor below 1200 calories for women and 1500 for men. Those limits are our own conservative choice, not official guidance — we set them because a calculator knows nothing about your health and should not print a very low number just because the arithmetic allows it. Below those, you need guidance from a dietitian or doctor.
This calculator gives an estimate, not medical advice. It does not replace a dietitian or doctor. If you have a health condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take medication, speak to a health professional before changing what you eat.
